Central Regional Coordinator
Shawn Anastasia is a Lieutenant/Paramedic for the Lake Mary Fire Department. His fire service career began in 2002. He holds a BA in Communications and has numerous service -elated certifications. Shawn has assisted in the Department's internal Health and Safety initiatives as well as the Peer Fitness program. He was named Firefighter of the Year in 2014 and Officer of the year in 2016 by his peers.
Shawn, a healthy and active young man, was diagnosed suddenly with Leukemia in late 2016. This diagnosis was the catalyst for his current focus on cancer in the fire service. He has spent the last few years educating himself on the prevalence of cancer in the fire service and the associated risk factors inherent to the job. His hope is to use his experience and his story to educate current, former and future fire service personnel on what they can modify to help lessen those risks.
Shawn recently accepted a role assisting Lieutenant Bert Vergara with coordinating the Central Florida region of the Florida Firefighter’s Safety and Health Collaborative (FFSHC).
Public speaking engagements include instructing in both his Department and the neighboring Departments and for various local service organizations. He will soon be launching a podcast specifically for Firefighters with Cancer.
Shawn’s greatest accomplishment is that of a devoted husband and father.
