FFSHC West-Central Region marked another important milestone for our organization! Thanks to the leadership of Clearwater Fire Department, Fire Chief Elhers and Chief John Klinefelter we have now branched out in excellent fashion to the western central region of Florida.

With 60 in attendance representing over 20 fire departments from this region and beyond - What a launch: Partnering with us in presentation was State Fire Marshall Director Julius Halas (reliable power packed support), Dr Alberto Caban-Martinez & Dr Natasha Schaefer Sollefrom Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (bringing the latest science and updated study information), Lt Bert Vergara (overview of our FFSHC Fitness Initiatives), Captain Christopher Bator (FFSHC and Mental Wellness overview), Lt Jacob Lee of the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, Florida Chapter & Samuel A. Eaton from our FFSHC Cancer Prevention Team (presenting on the HOW / WHY and Culture Change issues of FF cancer Prevention) with a hands on field demo showing the steps of Post Fire On Scene Decon. What we refer to as ”Firefighter Cancer Prevention 101”.

We were honored, especially honored, to have the powerful words of personal testimony on the horrible impact of a Fire Service related cancer loss. Mrs Sonia Alcover spoke about her beloved husband, our brother, Tampa Fire Rescue’s Investigator Supervisor Ray Alcover who lost his life to career related brain cancer at the young age of 51. While she has been vocal and active since his loss 4 years ago, this is first opportunity Sonia has had to speak publicly about this - and she did excellent!

Special Note: we are very pleased to introduce Ms. Kate Kapalo, from University of Central Florida. She has joined in support of our Collaborative Team. Please welcome Kate ! Also very happy to have the continued support of Ms. Rachel Russell McKeehan - your consistent reliable support of our organization is so very much appreciated !
