Coordinator Mental Wellness Team
Jeremy Hurd is an EMS Captain with Palm Beach County Fire Rescue (PBCFR) and oversees the department's professional development. He is also the chaplain for PBCFR and has helped to develop a comprehensive behavioral health program for the department. He has a passion for helping firefighters' emotional wellness by teaching about our preparation for critical incidents and our reaction to them.
Jeremy Hurd was a high school teacher for four years out of high school. That was followed by fours years serving as a not-for profit fundraiser and trainer for the Task Forces of the not-for profits. Captain Hurd is on the advisory board for the Rosecrance Florian Program, and is on the board for Trustbridge Hospice of Palm Beach County. He is currently enrolled in the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program and is pursuing a Master's Degree in Executive Leadership and Disaster Preparedness.
Jeremy serves as a Director for the Florida Firefighters Safety and Health Collaborative (FFSHC), which focuses in the areas of: firefighter cancer prevention, health and fitness, mental wellness, and firefighter safety. Through the FFSHC, Dustin co-chairs the statewide mental wellness team with a primary focus on positive outcomes for firefighter behavioral health initiatives.
Public speaking engagements include teaching at the local fire department, area departments, Safety Stand Downs, and presentations on the Collaborative. Specific events include: Florida Fire Chiefs Safety and Health Conference 2016, Florida Fire Chief Executive Development Conference 2017, as well as the Firefighter Cancer Initiative at University of Miami.
Jeremy has also spoken on many different topics related to FF behavioral health and emotional wellness to the leaders of the Florida State Fire College, Florida Bureau of Training and Safety, and the Florida CFO. Jeremy also teaches annually at the Fire Department Instructor's Conference, writes for Fire Engineering, and he has a monthly radio show on Fire Engineering entitled "Chaplain's Corner".
